Planning Your Central Otago Experience
Our local insights into travelling in Central Otago, New Zealand,
Every Obelisk Tours experience is designed around you. Whether you're visiting for a day, a long weekend, or a multi-day adventure through Central Otago, Queenstown, Wānaka, Cromwell, Bannockburn or Clyde, these FAQs will help you understand how our tours work and what to expect.
How much does a Central Otago wine tour cost?
As a guide, private Central Otago wine tours with Obelisk Tours typically start from around 350–450 NZD per person based on two guests, with per-person pricing decreasing for slightly larger private groups.
Exact pricing depends on the length of the tour, where guests are collected from — Clyde, Cromwell, Alexandra, Queenstown or Wānaka — and whether you want 1, 2, 3 or more wineries. We can also price tours to include lunch and platter options.
What’s included in the price of a wine tour?
A private wine tour price usually includes a dedicated local driver-guide, a comfortable vehicle, door-to-door pick-up and drop-off, and hosted tastings at several wineries. Enquiries can then be tailored into a clear quote showing inclusions such as tastings, lunch options, scenic stops and any additional experiences
How long does a Central Otago wine tour take?
Most importantly – our tours are never rushed. Most private wine tours run between 2-4 hours (half day) and 6-7 hours for a full day, with shorter one-off winery experiences and shorter half-day options available for guests staying in Clyde, Alexandra or Cromwell. Guests travelling from Queenstown or Wānaka should allow extra time for the scenic drive into Central Otago so the day still feels relaxed. We include clear timings when we send you your personalised itinerary.
Which Central Otago wine regions do you visit?
Most itineraries focus on boutique vineyards around Clyde, Alexandra, Cromwell and Bannockburn rather than only the busiest Queenstown wine routes. Tours can also be tailored around specific cellar doors or preferred wine styles where possible. We have tours that include organic wine, sparkling wine and Pinot Noir, amongst others. You can get some inspiration from our tours and see the wineries we visit here.

Can I do a Central Otago wine tour as a day trip from Queenstown?
Yes. Many visitors stay in Queenstown and Wanaka, and travel to Central Otago for the day to enjoy a quieter wine touring experience beyond the main Gibbston circuit. Private pick-up from Queenstown or Queenstown Airport can be combined with visits to wineries around Bannockburn, Clyde or Cromwell before returning to Queenstown or Wanaka later that day. That said, we recommend you allow an hour each way (often only a 45 minute journey) and at least half a day (3-4 hours) to really enjoy the full experience.
Can I do a wine tour from Wānaka to Central Otago?
Absolutely. Wānaka is a convenient base for visiting Cromwell, Bannockburn, Clyde and other Central Otago wine areas. A private tour or transfer allows guests to spend the day tasting wine in Central Otago and return to Wānaka without needing to drive.
Is it better to stay in Queenstown or Clyde for wine tours?
Queenstown suits travellers who want nightlife, adventure activities and easy access to Gibbston Valley wineries. Clyde and Cromwell place guests closer to Central Otago’s historic towns, boutique vineyards and experiences such as the Otago Central Rail Trail. It all depends on what you're after. If you want the tourist trail, Queenstown is great. If you want to experience Central Otago with the locals, Clyde or Cromwell are great spots to stay.
How far are Clyde and Cromwell from Queenstown and Wānaka?
Cromwell and Bannockburn are roughly 45–50 minutes from Queenstown by road, while Clyde is just under an hour away. From Wānaka, Cromwell is about 45 minutes away, and Clyde is a little further, which makes the region well-suited to private day tours and easy private transfers. Clyde has been dubbed 'the new Arrowtown', and so although it takes a little longer to get to, it makes up for this in historic charm and boutique style experience.

What are the best wine tours in Central Otago for couples?
Couples often look for smaller, slower-paced wine tours where they can talk with winemakers, enjoy lunch and avoid the feel of a crowded bus trip. Private tours from Clyde or Cromwell suit this well because they allow more flexibility, privacy and time at each stop. You also get to explore wineries that most people will never discover. A few of our favourites are: Ruru Wines at Immigrant's Vineyard (featured on Grand Designs), Carrick Vineyard & Cellar Door and Monte Christo Winery, as well as classic favourites like the Cloudy Bay Tasting Shed & Mount Difficulty.
Is a private wine tour worth it compared with a group tour from Queenstown?
Group tours from Queenstown are often cheaper per person, but they usually follow a fixed route and timetable. But the real experience isn’t found in rushing between vineyards. A private Central Otago wine tour offers more flexibility, more personalised pacing and the chance to focus on quieter areas such as Clyde, Alexandra and Bannockburn.
Central Otago is one of the world’s most respected wine regions — known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, striking landscapes, and boutique cellar doors. We create private wine tours in Central Otago that are thoughtfully planned around you — your pace, your preferences, and your idea of a great day.
Are Central Otago wine tours suitable for beginners?
Yes. Central Otago wine tours are generally very approachable for people who simply want a lovely day out rather than a technical wine lesson. Tastings and guiding can be adapted so the experience feels relaxed, welcoming and easy to enjoy, whether you are brand new to wine or already know the region.
Can you combine wine tasting with other activities like the Otago Central Rail Trail?
Many travellers combine Central Otago wine tasting with the Otago Central Rail Trail, local history or scenic touring around Clyde and surrounding areas. Private transfers and tailored itineraries make it easier to connect these experiences into one smooth trip. Get in touch and we can talk through multi-day itineraries and combined tour options for your trip.
What should I wear on a Central Otago wine tour?
Comfortable clothing and layers are the best option because Central Otago weather can shift quickly across Clyde, Cromwell and Bannockburn. Flat shoes or wedges are usually best for lawns, a light jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are useful for most of the year, with warmer layers needed in winter. Probably leave the stilettos at home for this one!
Can I drive after a wine tour, or should I book a driver?
New Zealand’s drink-driving limits are strict, and several tastings can quickly make self-driving a poor idea. Booking a tour or private transfer allows guests to enjoy Central Otago wineries safely without worrying about the drive back to Clyde, Queenstown or Wānaka.
Are your wine tours and transfers suitable for families?
Most wineries are family-friendly, with outdoor areas and food options that work well for mixed-age groups. Private tours are especially useful for families because the day can be shaped around shorter stops, scenic breaks by the lake and time in towns such as Clyde or Cromwell for little ones to stretch their legs.
Do I need to tip my guide in Central Otago?
Tipping is not expected in New Zealand, including on wine tours and transfers. For small tourism businesses, online reviews are often one of the most helpful ways guests can support a great experience after their trip. But a lovely tip, if you’ve had an amazing day is always appreciated.
What is the best Central Otago wine tour for my budget?
Shared group tours are usually the lowest-cost option, while private tours cost more but provide more flexibility, comfort and a more tailored day. For guests who value door-to-door service, local insight and a custom itinerary, a private tour can offer stronger overall value than the cheapest ticket price suggests. It depends on whether you mostly value your time, ease and enjoyment – or the bottom dollar. You can often save pressure hours booking a door-to-door tour, without any additional transport required. If you’re on a short break, this allows you to really make the most of your time.
How do I find small, local wine tours instead of big bus tours?
Look out for smaller operators. Obelisk Tours is positioned around private Central Otago tours and transfers focused on Clyde, Alexandra, Cromwell, Bannockburn and nearby back-country areas. Traditional and larger tour companies from Queenstown, generally offer a more cookie-cutter approach to tours visiting the largest and easiest wineries. We take you to many wineries most people will never reach, as well as backcountry scenic tours if that’s what you’re after.
What are the must-do wine experiences near Queenstown and Wānaka?
Many visitors start with Queenstown and Gibbston Valley, then head into Central Otago for boutique cellar doors, historic towns and different vineyard landscapes around Cromwell, Bannockburn, Clyde and Alexandra. Many Queenstown wine tours may actually bring you out to Central Otago - or, a local company like us can come and pick you up from your accommodation in Queenstown or Wanaka and offer private transport for the day.
A locally guided private tour can make those regional differences easier to understand and more enjoyable to experience. Central Otago is generally considered more of a luxury wine region than Queenstown itself. Must-do visits are to regions like Bannockburn, Northburn and Lowburn, as well as the Alexandra basin, that offer incredible wine-tasting experiences that most tourists will miss.
When is the best time of year to book a Central Otago wine tour?
Summer and autumn are especially popular because of warm weather, harvest activity and strong visitor demand across Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago. Booking ahead is particularly sensible for premium private tours over Christmas, New Year, long weekends and major event periods. So, if you want to get in for those periods, now is probably the time to get in touch!
Spring (September to December) is becoming increasingly popular and a beautiful time to visit if you value the quiet (and love blossom). Winter is also stunning, offering sunny days alongside snow-capped mountains, but hiring a guide can be particularly important in the winter with icy roads and many smaller wineries open by appointment only. We make sure you can still get in and have an incredible experience, year-round!

TESTIMONIALS
DINEKE AND MARCEL, NETHERLANDS
Dear Lauren,
Thank you so much for the wonderful tour.
It was an exceptionally beautiful drive through the mountains, with stunning scenery along the way.
We really appreciated that you took all the time needed to stop and enjoy the views. Your knowledge about the area, the gold miners, and the way people lived in those days was impressive and made the tour even more interesting.
Halfway through, we enjoyed an amazing and very extensive lunch. We were expecting a simple sandwich and a drink, but this was far beyond that – a fantastic surprise. We’ve included a photo of the picnic to show how special it was.
Everything was perfectly organized. Compliments to Obelisk Tours – highly recommended!
